Aave has made solid progress in cleaning up the aftermath of the $292 million Kelp DAO exploit the largest DeFi hack of 2026.
According to Arkham, Aave and its partners have already raised about $160 million of the roughly $200 million needed to cover the bad debt left behind. The coordinated effort, called DeFi United, is led by Aave service providers and aims to recapitalize rsETH and stabilize the broader lending market.
Major contributors include Mantle and the Aave DAO, who together provided 55,000 ETH (~$127 million). Aave founder Stani Kulechov also personally contributed 5,000 ETH (~$11.7 million).
This comes after the exploit triggered a wave of withdrawals Aave alone saw around $10 billion pulled out amid fears of contagion. The quick community response shows how DeFi can sometimes self-heal through collective action.
